An international round-table discussion was held at the Vernadsky CFU’s Office of International Affairs to mark the 170th anniversary of the outbreak of the Crimean War.
The event was attended by a number of the university’s faculty, students, and other guests, who exchanged their opinions on the role Crimea has been playing in the geopolitics of the great powers.
Speaking at the beginning of the roundtable, First Vice-Rector, Vice-Rector for International Affairs and Information Policy Sergei Iurchenko noted that the Crimean War was one of the major military conflicts of the 19th century which had a significant influence on Europe’s political landscape. The conflict was mainly fought in Crimea, and, therefore, past experiences are important while considering current events.
Other key speakers included Aleksandr Mashchenko, Director of the Vernadsky CFU’s Institute of Media Communications, Media Technology and Design, and Maksimilian Shepelev, Professor at the Department of Political Science and International Relations of the Vernadsky CFU’s Taurida Academy.
The main objective of the event was to emphasise the importance of preservation of historical memory among the younger generation.
