Africa Day 2024 was marked at the V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University with food, fun, and football on Friday, 24 May.
The event was aimed at celebrating and highlighting the cultural diversity and richness that exist on the African continent and at providing opportunity for students to learn more about Africa. It attracted many Vernadsky CFU students, both home and international, and was also attended by the University’s senior officials.
The celebrations kicked off with a friendly football match played between Indian Students and African Students, which was followed by an exhibition and tasting of traditional African food cooked by the students. At the end of the event, the most active participants and organisers were presented with certificates and awards.
Vernadsky CFU currently has over 2,500 international students, of whom more than 60 come from 12 African countries, including: Algeria, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Africa Day is annually celebrated on May 25 in various countries on the African continent and around the world to commemorate the foundation on that day back in 1963 of the Organisation of African Unity now known as the African Union, to mark the determination of the people of Africa to liberate the continent from colonialism and to foster its further progress.
