Vernadsky CFU Football Team won the second place in the Russia – Africa International Student Tournament that was held from 24 to 27 July, 2023 in St. Petersburg.
Eight leading student teams representing Russia and various African countries participated in the tournament.
Over the course of the tournament, the Crimean team won their matches against the Methodist University Ghana (2–1), the Saint Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design (7–0), and the Joint Cameroon and Mali Team (3–0), but were defeated 0–1 by the Kuban State University in the final game.
Egor Shparev, a second-year student at the Vernadsky CFU’s Academy of Construction and Architecture, was named the best striker of the tournament.
“The event was attended mainly by junior students from various academic units of Vernadsky CFU. No one had any experience of participating in international matches. Naturally, we felt nervous. In general, the team performed very well, including the finals, and demonstrated a decent game with a much more experienced opponent. Participation in such a prestigious international tournament is an invaluable experience for our young team. We represented our university commendably well”, – said Head of the Vernadsky CFU Football Team Andrei Gorbachev.
Vernadsky CFU is represented by two teams in the National Student Football League. The main team won the NSFL Group A championship title thrice, and this season is playing in the Premier Group of Igor Gamula Super League. Another team is playing in Group B of the Higher Division.
