On 16 June 2023, Vernadsky CFU hosted an international round-table discussion dedicated to the 95th birth anniversary of Ernesto Che Guevara, a key figure in the Cuban Revolution (1956–59), a guerrilla leader in South America, and a Cuban statesman.
The event was attended by Irina Kiviko, the Deputy Head of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Crimea and the Head of the Crimean Branch of the Russian Society for Friendship with Cuba, Vladimir Kurianov, the Vice-Rector for Academic and Administrative Policy at Vernadsky CFU, and Sergei Iurchenko, the Vice-Rector for International Affairs and Information Policy at Vernadsky CFU, as well as by the university’s students and academic staff members.
“Students prepared various materials: presentations, interviews, an array of media content, research reports, and many more. All works are themed around Ernest Che Guevara, Cuba, and the ties between our countries and peoples. Without Che Guevara there is no history of the XX century and history of modernity. Without understanding the history of the Cuban Revolution it is impossible to understand the processes that are taking place in the world right now and that affect each of us. Besides, this year Ernesto Che Guevara could have celebrated his 95th birthday, and that’s also the reason we host this event,” said Head of the Office of International Affairs at Vernadsky CFU Aleksandr Mashchenko.
The event featured a presentation of the ‘Che. Cuba is Far. Cuba is Near’, a journal by Journalism students at the Vernadsky CFU’s Institute of Media Communications, Media Technology and Design, which contains mostly unique material for this topic has never been researched in-depth before.
One of the highlights of the round-table discussion was the announcement of the results for the competition of research projects, popular-science and journalistic works with the theme ‘Cuba: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow’ (to the 95th birth anniversary of Ernesto Che Guevara) held by the Vernadsky CFU’s Office of International Affairs between 10 March and 2 June. The competition attracted over 20 submissions from both international and domestic participants.
This round table event was co-hosted by the State Council of the Republic of Crimea, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Crimea, the Crimean Branch of the Russian Society for Friendship with Cuba, the Vernadsky CFU’s Office of International Affairs, the Crimean Regional Body of the Znanie Russian Society, the Crimean Branch of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems, and the Black Sea Association for International Cooperation.
